Traceability

Traceability at the product level and digital product passport (DPP)

European Green Deal

In 2019, the EU Commission introduced the European Green Deal, a detailed strategic plan aimed at sustainable growth. A key component of this plan is Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR), designed to guide the EU toward achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

In detail, ESPR mandates the adoption of production and consumption patterns that align with the Union's comprehensive sustainability goals related to climate change, environmental protection, energy use, resource efficiency, and biodiversity preservation—all within defined planetary boundaries. To reach these objectives, the regulation introduces a set of strict ecodesign requirements.

Implementation of the requirements

To support the implementation of these comprehensive requirements, ESPR highlights Digital Product Passports (DPP) as a key element and a central tool to ensure that all stakeholders in the value chain—manufacturers, distributors, consumers, and recyclers—have access to essential, traceable, and reliable product information. This supports informed consumer choices and promotes better resource management and sustainability practices.

The rollout of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) concept is set to occur gradually over the coming years. Specific details, including what will be included in the DPP for different product groups and intermediate products, will be outlined in delegated acts.

The project "Traceability and Labeling"

The "Traceability and Labeling" project was carried out in relation to, among other things, the Transparency Act. Contractors are looking for a standard and digitalized method to identify product traceability.

Building material producers aim to establish a standard and methodology for a common way to label and identify products and communicate delivery information digitally. This methodology must be anchored with contractors and trade in such a way that the requirements for suppliers in these areas are coordinated and consistent.

Based on this, the "Traceability and Labeling" project in the construction industry was implemented.
